The Omicron variant of Corona has been wreaking havoc in many countries of the world including India since the beginning of this year. Studies have shown that sub-optimal versions of Omicron cause infections more easily by avoiding vaccination or bypassing the immunity built up by prior infection. Experts believe that ever since the corona vaccine present around the world has been designed keeping in mind the real version of the virus. Now new variants are emerging with many mutations in the corona virus, due to which the risk of infection remains even after vaccination. With this in mind, the US FDA has approved a booster shot of a vaccine specifically targeting Omicron.

According to media reports, Americans will start getting this “updated booster” shot early next week. It is believed that this will help in controlling the risk of ongoing infection due to the Omicron sub-variant to a great extent.

However, scientists have raised questions about the approval of this vaccine as there is currently no data available to test it on humans. Meanwhile, India has also talked about launch such an update booster vaccine soon. Let’s know about this vaccine.

Know about the updated booster vaccine

The Foods and Drugs Administration (FDA) said in a statement that two updated booster vaccine manufactured by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna have been approved. Both are bivalent vaccine, Meaning they contain two mRNA components of SARS-CoV-2 virus. The first is the original strain and the second is identical to Omicron’s sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5. Giving this booster shot is expected to help reduce the increased risk due to Omicron.

The havoc of BA.4 and BA.5

Significantly, due to the BA.4 and BA.5 sub-variants of Omicron, cases of infection are increasing in many countries of the world including India and America. FDA Vaccine Regulator Dr Peter Marks said that the goal of this booster vaccine shot is not only to control the infection by targeting a specific type of corona, but we hope that through these vaccines we will be protected from infection for a long time. You can benefit from keeping it.
Questions raised on the approval of the vaccine

However, questions are being raised on how effective this booster shot will be. According to a report in Science, companies have so far submitted only animal based data for the BA.4/BA.5 booster shot. Data on how effective it will be on humans has not been shared. According to the report, its clinical trial is to start from next month.

This will potentially test recipients’ antibody levels, the vaccine’s efficacy against infection or serious disease, and how effective these vaccines are at protecting humans from particular forms is still a big question.

The question is also on what basis have these vaccines been approved without a complete investigation report?

When such a vaccine will be available in India?

Serum Institute of India CEO Adar Poonawalla has also made a big announcement regarding the vaccine targeting Omicron variants in this way in India. On Thursday, he told during an event that we are working on a plan to launch a special vaccine targeting Omron within the next six months. There are good data against Omicron for the Kovavax vaccine. Although the vaccines so far are effective in protecting against serious diseases, we are still trying to launch an Omicron specific vaccine.
